Corgi Shaker card; Step-By-Step Card Walkthrough

Hello folks. Today I wanted to share with you my introduction to Heffy Doodle and a brand new stamp and die set that has become part of my craft stash. 3 weeks ago on April 23rd 2021, I posted about a stamping and masking technique using the Veggie Patch set. I was graciously contacted by a fellow crafter to enter the Heffy Doodle Monthly Craft Challenge on their facebook group page 'Heffy Doodlers', and what do you know it, I was a very lucky first time winner.

Heffy Doodle gifted me a £35 voucher to spend in their store and I want to share with you my first make with my chosen set. Thank you to Heffy Doodle and the very generous fellow crafter who suggested the submission.

This is the Step-by-step walkthrough of the Corgi's Royal-Tea Birthday Shaker Card. I hope you enjoy.

To start, I used Memento Ink to stamp out several images from the Heffy Doodle 'Oh Crumbs' stamp set onto white cardstock.

I stamp several images as I know I'm likely to make mistakes in my colouring and don't enjoy redoing the stamping step. This means I'm more relaxed with my colour as I'm more prepared and bothers me less when It just feel like it's not quite right. I use my Copic (Alcohol-based) marker pens to colour in the adorable Corgi's and additional stamped embellishments.

Copic have a huge range of colours available and I have a small collection that I work with, so don't feel obliged to follow this colour set up. It's just a good reference to have in order to recreate them.

Using the Co-ordinating 'Oh Crumbs' die set and low tack tape, I die cut out each of the pieces that I'll need for the card.

Adding to the 'Royal-Tea' theme of the card, I die cut out the Tattered Lace 'Sofa' using white cardstock.

I spent a bit of time using my Copic's to add layers of colour to the sofa starting with the lightest colour first and working in the deeper tones. For the Sofa framework, I used Gold Metallic Watercolour to add that regal atmosphere. You can of course use a Gold Gel Pen or Gilding Flakes to add the Gold but this is what I had to hand.

On a fresh piece of white cardstock, I marked in pencil the size of my 6x6" card front in order to know what space I had to work in. I applied Distress Oxide Broken China onto the white cardstock with my blending brush whilst having a scrap piece of white card (with a straight edge in tact) to mask off about 2/3rds of the measured out space.

Using IndigoBlu's 6x6" Stencil (Name of the Stencil not known) I then applied Distress Oxide Chipped Sapphire over the top.

The style of the Stencil added greatly to the Regal theme whilst creating a setting for the Corgi's to be placed onto. Here I've trimmed down the cardstock back to the 6x6" card size using those pencil marks from earlier.

I carefully placed a Sizzix Framelit Circle Die that I felt was confident to be seen behind the Sofa without getting too close to the edge of the card and risk the card to feel too thin and unstable. As my Die Cutting Machine Plates have had a lot of wear I know them to create unintended texture from the marks it has collected, so as I run the Circle Die through my machine, (Top Tip) I place it between two pieces of cardstock the size of my plates to take them impression rather than the front piece for my card.

Here I'm going to use Funky Foam Sheets to create the lift for the shaker part of the card. You can find this is the children's area of craft supermarkets at a really cheap price and it can save costs on 3D Foam Pads as you could easily end up using lots for an inbuilt shaker card such as this one. I choose the colour of foam based on the majority of the background colour, in this case it still remains the white.

Now I know this looks messy and sad looking, but this part isn't going to be visible. I've used the front of the card as a reference to how large I needed to cut out my 'Circle' out of the Foam. As Long as it's larger than the neat front Circle in order for it and the glue to be hidden, then that's okay. I tried to be carful about leaving enough foam edge near the top of my circle to keep it strong and you'll also notice that I've made a larger gap at the bottom of the messy circle so that the shaker pieces have more space to sit out of sight before the recipient has a play.

First things first, I need to apply my acetate the card to create the window and then glue down the foam for the lift. For this I use my trusty Cosmic Shimmer Acrylic Glue. Apply well completing a full circle of glue for each piece and spend a few minutes with it to make sure that it's sealed. You don't want those shaker pieces flying everywhere.

Using the same Circle Die from before and some low tack tape, I line my the die up onto my card base (6x6" card) using the existing front of card (Blue Regal front). Important to note; when you run your card base through your machine, don't forget to open up your card flat, otherwise you're going to cut though both layers of you card.

Another important step; Acetate needs to be added to the front of your card base too. As before, apply some glue completing a full circle for a tight seal.

I then add a touch of powder to the acetate windows to help reduce the static of the shaker pieces. Anti-Static Bags are great for projects such as these but It irritates me when I can see the powder, so I just lightly blow on my project after I've powdered it up to take off any unnecessary excess.

With my chosen shakers pieces, in this case sequins, I place them in the centre of the circle on the base card and glue all the way around my foamed up front piece and gently line up the two pieces and hold for a few minutes. I lightly press around the circle as its dries to ensure a through seal. Congratulations if you're working through this project, the hardest part is done and you have yourself a shaker card.

Part of the 'Oh Crumbs' Heffy Doodle Stamp and die set is a Corgi that has a front and a butt. It's very cute a funny, and so I wanted to make the most of this opportunity. As our shaker window goes through to the inside of the card, I wanted the recipient to open it and have a bit of a laugh when a Corgi's butt is visible. So I've placed the front Corgi onto the front of the Sofa as If he is hanging over the back of the Sofa and then I realised the recipient may also see some of the sofa. I decided to cut out another Sofa, just out of white cardstock, so that it looked clean and cared for rather than the messy Ink Bleed from the other side from my Copics.

After preparing the 'butt Corgi', I also had to be mindful of the placement of the 3D Foams Pads as they may also be visible through the window. So you can see in the image below that I've strategically placed them all around the edge to create the lift on the front of the card but without them being exposed on the inside, (unlike the Corgi's butt, hehe). You can also see in the image that I intended to place the cut out circle on the inside as I have often done before but decided against it this time as it didnn't add anything to the the card. The blue stencilling on the circle piece was going to be hidden behind the sofa anyway.

All that there was left to do was place the remaining Corgi's at the luxury with all their elegant lunch and tea set and added some sentiments. The Birthday Wishes Die Sentiment by Cut & Mae was cut out of the leftover of the same blue stencilled flooring with another die cut on black to help it pop against the white card stock. 'Let's party like Royal-Tea' is included in the Heffy Doodle 'Oh Crumbs' Stamp set and this card was based of this sentiment. I stamped it onto white cardstock with clear Hi-Boss embossing ink and cover with Opaque Bright White embossing powder and heated with a heat embossing tool. I didn't have to use white embossing powder as my cardstock was white I could have used clear embossing powder, but it had decided to go for a walk today and was lost in amongst the craft mess I was surrounded with...I know you know what I mean). Using the same Gold Metallic Watercolour from earlier I painted over my sentiment and waited for it to dry. Using a very lightly dampened cloth, I removed any excess gold and with the embossing be a resist, it came off easily. I cut out my sentiment, cut banner triangles into the side and added it to the card.

And there we have it, Corgi's living the Royal Life they deserver, complete as a cheerful shaker card. I love the whimsical and playful character of this stamp and die set and that is exactly why they were my chosen competition wins. They were too irresistible to say no too.
