Hello folks, today I'm going to walk you through the simple step-by-step process of the 'Oh My Gourd Birthday Card'. It uses a simple stamping and masking technique that can be used time and time again in so many different crafty projects.
This card features the beautiful stamps and coordinating die set Veggie Patch from Heffy Doodle. These kind of stamps are clean and simple which is a blessing for some beautiful colouring to take place and if you're anything like me, i'm ever so grateful when they produce matching die sets as I am not keen on fussy cutting each image out no matter how simple a line they may provide. So a huge thumbs up for Heffy Doodle.
Use Dye-based Ink when colouring with Alcohol-based Markers to stop it for smudging or bleeding.
Using Copic Markers (Alcohol-based Pens), I coloured in each of the characters. I take my time with each of them and mark out the colours that I have selected and create a swatch to get a good idea of what each colour truly looks like. If I don't think they're exactly what i'm going for I leave them in the order that I put down the colours and just use the ones that do. That way I will have an order of pens and know exactly what each looks like.
Using the Veggie Patch Die set, I cut out a few of each character on Vellum, but you could also use tracing paper or greaseproof paper, as long as you can see through it a little in order to help with placing over your images. In order to stick the Vellum on top of the coloured images, I used a low tack masking tape and folded it back on itself.
I then used Iced Spruce Distress Oxide and a few small stamp embellishments from the Time For Tea Designs Spooktacular Stamp set to stamp some stars across the background. Once again, don't be afraid to stamp over the Vellum and the edges of the cardstock, it just adds more confidence to your work.
For the really fun bit, REVEAL your beautiful work so far by removing your Vellum covers, carefully.
Using the Black Memento Ink and the sentiments from the Veggie Patch Stamp set, stamp out onto some cardstock of your choice and trim it down. And for some added fun you can always cut a small triangle from each end to create a banner effect.
I used some 3D Foam pads to give 'Oh My Gourd' and 'Birthday' some height, whilst using my trusty Cosmic Shimmer Acrylic Glue for 'it's your', so that they create a contrast in their depths on the card.

When I colour in a character I always start with the lightest colour and layer them and blend them as I go a tone darker each time. It often happens that when i've reached the darkest tone that I will go over any areas that need a tad more blending with the lightest marker again.

I've then continued stamping onto the background with a small circle/dot stamp form the Spooktacular set and then create some even smaller dots to fill the space out a bit with a Silver Posca Pen. Of Course you can use whatever colours you like for your own characters and background stamps.

Using a small alphabet die set from XCut and large diagonal embossed alphabet die set from The Works, I ran them through my Die Cutting machine on some dark grey and khaki green cardstock scraps.
I used some 3D Foam pads to give 'Oh My Gourd' and 'Birthday' some height, whilst using my trusty Cosmic Shimmer Acrylic Glue for 'it's your', so that they create a contrast in their depths on the card.
Using a Gelly Roll White Pen, I went over the characters adding just a line of highlight on their right sides to add a bit of shine to them.
With your card base ready, turn over you piece of work and add double-sided sticky tape to your edges.
TOP TIP: when trying to line up your work to your card base, if you peel back your tape and make these folds, then when you turn it over to line it up right you can pull the tabs when you're certain you've got it straight. If you have't then you've got a lot less to unstick.
(If you're not happy with how you have stuck it down, TOP TIP: hold a bit of your card and gently wiggle it side to side until it releases. Don't just pull upwards and crease your hard work).
I love the simplicity of a traditional stamp and colour card but with some added techniques just to add that little extra. Simple but effective, and fun.
If you made this card or one similar using the techniques shown in this blog, then I hope you enjoyed learning and had fun in the process. Feel free to share any of your makes with me on Instagram @bluebrumby.
Keep Crafting,
Jessica
