Crafting the Flamingo - An Editorial Piece

Hello folks. I've been sorting through some older projects of mine and reminiscing and I wanted to share a slightly different project with you today. Like many of you, I have been a crafter since I was very young and as I've become disciplined in a few creative mediums, my craft world hasn't stopped developing either. So here is a project I call 'Flamingo Editorial'.

Learning to be a Designer has been quite a journey and it's one that still continues till this day, however this piece was from back in 2018 after I had finished university and was trying to make my first Editorial piece. I struggled to find reliable resources to learn from and decided to use existing and published pieces to observe and analyse. All I needed now was a topic.

Well, It became obvious to me that I needed a topic that I knew of relatively well in order for the attention to remain on learning about how I was going to approach the layout, colours and features. What better than indulging my craft interest into my design experiment. I could create my own cards, I could be my own photographer and then get down to the grafting of the Editorial Design.

Put very briefly, I analysed the other magazines, I planned out my own and set to it. This piece was going to a small featured piece for a craft magazine where they provide you with a free flamingo stamp and demonstrate some examples for crafters to follow and feel inspired. I wanted to approach each card tutorial with different techniques and embellishments for the craft reader to take forward with them into future makes of their own.

After I had my plans sketched out, I carefully planned and crafted the three project cards. I then put them into a small photography session to capture hero images of the three and begun placing them into the design software to bring all three skillsets together; Craft, Photography and Editorial Design.

With quite a few adaptations of the piece, I wanted to keep true to a creative feel for this Magazine Feature. I crafted a few more handmade textures and patterns to place on the front and back cover to capture the jazzy and crafty Flamingo feel as an introduction for the readers/crafters.

Feel free to download the PDF to see the projects in detail and don't forget to let me know what you think of my piece from 2018.

The flamingo stamp was no designed by me and the web addresses are just example as this was never a published article. Just me and my skillset to try and duplicate a feature piece.
